Cursor vs Claude Code vs Windsurf: The 6 Differences Users Report in 2026

October 29, 2026

Every week a developer posts the same question on Reddit: should I pay for Cursor, Claude Code or Windsurf? The replies are loud, contradictory and mostly one person's month. Picking an agent from that thread is how teams end up paying for two and trusting neither.

On Feedback Bench, users prefer Claude Code over Cursor, and Windsurf is not ranked as its own agent. In Feedback Bench 1.1 (posts from Aug 31 to Oct 25, 2026), Claude Code ranks 1st of 17 coding agents with a Feedback Score of 67.8 and Cursor ranks 7th with 51.2; Windsurf, now Devin Desktop, has no separate score. The gap is not uniform: Claude Code wins on doing the work, and Cursor wins on reviewing it.

Enterpret builds Feedback Bench from public posts on Reddit, X, G2 and Trustpilot. Rankings update weekly.

What a fair coding agent comparison needs

  1. Many users, counted once. Feedback Bench counts user-weeks: one person, about one agent, in one week.
  2. Love and reach, kept separate. A tool can be widely discussed and widely disliked. The Feedback Score weighs popularity (how many people post) and customer love (how those posts rate it against the category norm of 0.5) equally.
  3. Criteria, not vibes. The bench labels every post against 63 criteria in 9 areas, from plan value to diff review.
  4. Direct comparisons. The strongest signal is a post that judges two agents at once, because the same person is holding both to the same standard.
  5. Receipts. Every number should trace to posts you can open.

The criteria are the differentiator. An overall score tells you who is winning; the criteria tell you whether they are winning on the thing you care about.

The 6 differences users report

1. Overall: Claude Code ranks 1st, Cursor 7th

Claude Code is the most discussed coding agent on the bench, with a popularity of 1.000 and 31.08% share of voice across 49,989 users. Its customer love is 0.567, 5th of 17. Cursor is 5th of 17 on popularity (0.802, 14,198 users) but 15th of 17 on customer love at 0.475, below the category norm. Claude Code ranks high on 28 of 63 criteria and low on 10; Cursor ranks high on 5 and low on 20.

What it means: lots of people use Cursor, and on balance they are less happy with it than the average coding agent user is with theirs.

2. Head to head: Claude Code leads in 61% of direct comparisons

407 posts judge Claude Code and Cursor together. Leaving out 97 ties, Claude Code comes out ahead in 188 and Cursor in 122, a 60.6% share for Claude Code (95% interval 55.1% to 65.9%). In r/cursor, Claude Code is ahead 139 to 59. In r/ClaudeCode, Cursor is ahead 47 to 34.

What it means: people praise the tool they are switching to in the community of the tool they are leaving. Read any single subreddit and you get a skewed answer in both directions.

3. Paying and limits: both draw complaints, for different reasons

On the paying and limits area, Claude Code is 8th of 13 (0.517) and Cursor is 11th of 13 (0.451). Claude Code is 3rd of 12 on how much use a plan's price buys; Cursor is 10th. Claude Code's pain is the ceiling, not the value: its top request, in 329 user-weeks, is a one-time usage limit reset, followed by more bonus resets (108) and higher overall limits (97). Cursor is 11th of 12 on a single prompt or model consuming disproportionate quota.

What it means: Claude Code users feel they get a lot and want more of it. Cursor users more often feel a request cost more than it should.

4. Instructions and context: Claude Code 1st, Cursor better at finding files

Claude Code ranks 1st of 11 on instructing and context (0.565), and 1st on reading project rules files, context compaction and memory across sessions. Cursor is 5th of 11 (0.505), with one standout: it ranks 1st of 5 on finding the right files in the codebase, just ahead of Claude Code in 2nd.

What it means: Cursor's indexing earns its keep. Claude Code is better at remembering what you told it and doing it.

5. Reliability and support: a wide gap, then a shared weakness

On reliability and speed, Claude Code is 3rd of 13 (0.629) and 1st of 10 on latency and fast mode. Cursor is 12th of 13 (0.457), 9th of 11 on client crashes and freezes, and 9th of 9 on install, launch and sign-in. Support is weak for both: Cursor is 9th of 9 on support, refunds and issue handling, and Claude Code is 8th of 9. Three of Cursor's top requests ask for human or faster support.

What it means: Cursor's editor is the bigger reliability risk; on support, neither leads.

6. Where Cursor wins: reviewing, steering and the editor

Cursor ranks 1st of 5 on reviewing and approving the agent's changes, where Claude Code ranks 5th of 5. It is 1st of 7 on IDE and editor integration and 1st of 3 on stopping and steering a running agent. On the interface and sessions area Cursor is 4th of 14 against Claude Code's 10th. Claude Code's lowest marks: 5th of 5 on safety filters blocking legitimate tasks.

What it means: Cursor is the better cockpit. Feedback Bench published a full analysis of this: Cursor is 1st of 5 on letting developers see and approve every change.

Where Windsurf stands in 2026

Windsurf's users are not scored separately, so the bench cannot tell you how they feel about it today. What is on the public record: Cognition, the maker of Devin, signed an agreement to acquire Windsurf in July 2025, after Google hired Windsurf's CEO and some of its research team in a licensing deal. On June 2, 2026, Windsurf became Devin Desktop. Cognition's documentation says the full Windsurf IDE remains available and existing plans and pricing are unchanged.

Because Windsurf is now Devin, the bench counts r/windsurf and the Windsurf X handle under Devin, which ranks 2nd of 17 with a Feedback Score of 63.7 and the highest customer love on the bench (0.606). Do not read that as a Windsurf score. Windsurf sources make up 604 of the 10,545 posts counted for Devin; most of the rest come from Cognition's and Devin's own X handles. And the bench has no direct Devin versus Cursor or Devin versus Claude Code comparison with enough posts to show.

Why so many developers run both

The most useful post in this data is not a rave or a rant. It is a reply in an r/cursor thread asking who still uses Cursor next to Claude Code: "the diff navigation is the one thing i'd miss too, that's basically the only reason i still open cursor."

That one line explains the head-to-head split. "Which do users prefer" assumes a single winner. The criteria show two jobs: getting the work done, where Claude Code leads, and checking the work, where Cursor leads. Plenty of developers have stopped choosing and run the agent in one tool and the review in the other.

There is a lesson here for anyone reading public feedback about their own product. Public posts are a reach signal, and each community skews toward whoever it is comparing against. Our guide to the public channels worth tracking for community feedback covers why volume in one channel misleads, and the tools to analyze Reddit product feedback covers the collection side.

Also watch the weekly view. Cursor ranked 4th to 7th in every week from Aug 31 to Oct 12, then 15th in the week of Oct 19. The bench notes its labelling model changed from the week of Oct 12, so treat one week as a prompt to look, not a verdict. That is the point of publishing Feedback Bench with its method: a ranking you can check beats a ranking you have to trust.

Where Enterpret fits for teams on Claude Code or Cursor

Enterpret does for a company's own customer feedback what Feedback Bench does for coding agents: pull every channel into one place, categorize it with an Adaptive Taxonomy that stays consistent over time, and tie each theme to the accounts and revenue behind it. For teams already living in Claude Code or Cursor, the Enterpret MCP server brings that evidence into the agent with citations, so a developer can investigate customer issues while coding without opening another tool.

It works in both. If you pick Cursor, see the MCP servers for customer feedback in Cursor. The caveat: Enterpret needs integrations connected and time to process your history before the answers are useful, so it is not an instant setup.

Best for: product and engineering teams who want their coding agent to know what customers are saying about the code it is changing.

How to choose

  • You want the agent that users rate highest overall: Claude Code. It ranks 1st of 17 and leads the head-to-head.
  • You review every change line by line: Cursor. It ranks 1st of 5 on reviewing and approving changes.
  • You work in a large codebase and need the right files found: Cursor, 1st of 5 there.
  • You run long tasks and want rules and memory obeyed: Claude Code, 1st of 11 on instructing and context.
  • You hit usage limits constantly: neither is clean. Claude Code users ask for resets; Cursor users report requests that burn quota.
  • You are already on Windsurf: it is now Devin Desktop, and the bench does not score it separately. Judge it on your own team's experience.
  • You can afford both: many developers run Claude Code for the work and open Cursor for the diff.

The decision rule: pick the agent that wins on the criterion where your team loses the most time, not the one with the higher overall score.

FAQ

Do developers prefer Claude Code or Cursor?

On Feedback Bench 1.1 (posts from Aug 31 to Oct 25, 2026), Claude Code ranks 1st of 17 coding agents with a Feedback Score of 67.8 and Cursor ranks 7th with 51.2. In the 407 posts that judge both, Claude Code comes out ahead in 60.6% of those with a clear winner. Cursor still leads on reviewing changes, IDE integration and finding the right files.

Is Windsurf on Feedback Bench?

No. Windsurf is not ranked as its own agent. Windsurf became Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026, so the bench folds r/windsurf and the Windsurf X handle into Devin, but those Windsurf posts are 604 of the 10,545 posts counted for Devin, so Devin's rank is not a Windsurf score.

Can I use Claude Code and Cursor together?

Yes, and many developers do. Posts on Feedback Bench describe running Claude Code as the agent and opening Cursor to read and approve the diff. That split matches the data: Claude Code leads on doing the work and Cursor leads on reviewing it.

Can I ask ChatGPT or Claude which coding agent users prefer?

You can, but a chat model answers from whatever it retrieves or remembers, and it will not count the same posts the same way twice. Enterpret's own research found that even the most consistent of eight frontier models changed more than 60% of its theme set between identical runs on the same 100 records. Feedback Bench publishes its posts, counts and method so the answer can be checked.

How does Enterpret build Feedback Bench?

Enterpret collects public posts from Reddit, X, G2 and Trustpilot, labels each against 63 criteria in 9 areas, and counts one person per agent per week so loud accounts do not dominate. The Feedback Score weighs popularity and customer love equally, and the rankings update weekly. It is the same kind of analysis Enterpret runs on a company's own customer feedback.
